Daytop graduates are drug−free, productive, and self supporting. Our education programs provide our clients the opportunity to gain the academic, vocational and life skills they will need to attain this goal.

Education Programs

All adolescent clients without a High School degree continue their schooling while at Daytop. They may prepare for further academic education or vocational training. Classes are held at all facilities offering full day programs for adolescents, and include middle school, high school, and GED (General Equivalency Diploma) test preparation.


Daytop adult residential facilities offer on−site educational programs including Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL). These may precede or be integrated with vocational programs. Qualified clients may enroll in courses through local community colleges. Classes of academic or vocational subjects are integrated into the treatment plans, and clients’ goals and progress are monitored by clinical as well as educational staff.

College Courses

Both Adolescent and Adult clients may qualify to take College courses at the Sullivan County Community College campus, or on−site with Dutchess County Community College. Classes are held at Daytop’s Millbrook, Springwood, and Meadow Run facilities two evenings per week.

Admission criteria is a High School Diploma, GED, or previous college coursework. Residents register as non−matriculated students and course selection is usually based on ability to transfer credits. However, courses may also be taken for reasons of self−improvement.

Goals and Plans

Clinical and vocational activities are integrated within the clinical program. Vocational goals and plans for reaching them are part of the client’s individual treatment plan. Clinical activities, with their stress on accountability, encourage the responsible behavior and perseverance which lead to the successful completion of jobs and other life goals.


Adult treatment tracks begin vocational assessment shortly after a client joins the program. Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) counselors, most of whom are Certified Rehabilitation Counselors, determine the strengths, needs, interests, and abilities of clients, and assist them with goal development. One−on−one sessions allow VR counselors to monitor the progress of a client.


While Adolescent clients are often continuing their academic studies, clinical and VR counselors work with them to develop life goals, which may include further scholastic education and also vocational courses and preparation.

Collaborating Agencies

VR counselors work with a number of outside agencies including ACCES (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services), BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services), vocational training schools and community colleges. Through these programs, clients can obtain vocational training in fields such as heating and air conditioning repair, food service, commercial driving and nursing.

Besides education and training, vocational preparation may include school referrals, instruction in resume writing, conducting a job search, and interviewing skills.
